Summer Retreat Recommendations

How about booking yourself into a yoga retreat to inspire and restore your mind, body and soul. We love yoga retreats because they can work so well if you are short on time but are after maximum effect, just a weekend away can help you feel totally relaxed and restored. They can really help deepen your yoga practice and you’ll most likely have a chance to talk through with your teacher any niggles and benefit from workshops or one-on-one time. The joy about retreats is that you can go along on your own and meet like-minded people where you can enjoy delicious food and activities together.

I’ve been on the below retreats in the last year or so and would definitely recommend, depending on what you are looking for.

Balance & Glo – Isle Of Wight

The vibe: Luxurious loveliness in an island hideaway

The crowd: A friendly group of 12, late-twenties upwards

Price level: Mid- A reasonable £450 for 3 nights sharing with 1 other person in beautiful accommodation.

Anything to bear in mind: if coming from London, it feels like you’ve had a proper weekend away despite only being 2 hours on the train from Waterloo and a short hop on the ferry.

Yoga level:  Very accessible, suitable for different levels

Jenny and Evelyn run the weekend retreat in a beautiful barn conversion with views of the rolling hills and crashing seas. The small group of just 12 people means you quickly get to know one another and there is a real family atmosphere. Jenny teaches a vinyasa style of yoga and Evelyn is a cross fit trainer, we started the day with Jenny’s and Evelyn’s hybrid of yoga and fitness which are tailored to suit all levels. The afternoons include a yoga workshop (learning to take flight in crow), fitness session (tyre flipping included) plus a very delicious energy ball workshop.

Balance & Glo really champion the Isle of Wight produce and small businesses with well thought out and absolutely delicious food. Jenny and Evelyn prepare the super healthy and fuelling brunch and the vegetarian dinners were prepared by islanders Tanya’s Pantry and The Piano Cafe. The schedule had just the right amount of activities and downtime which could be spent with a beach walk, horse riding or just cosying up in the snug.

Next retreat: Winter Warmer Retreat in October – Friday 4th October – Monday 7th October 2019

Eco- Yoga – Scottish Highlands

The vibe: For when you really want to get away, have a digital detox or immerse yourself in nature.

The crowd: Groups up to 20 people, I was there with my Mum and we weren’t the only Mother and Daughter duo, there were also a few couples, sisters and groups of friends.

Price Level: Depends on the length of time and teacher running it but for a 3-night retreat the price is in the region of £595 – fully catered

Anything to bear in mind: it’s a trek- but worth the journey! You can travel to a nearby station by train from Glasgow and then be picked up.

Yoga Level: Course dependent but I’d say people know what they are doing

If you fancy some time out, Eco Yoga really helps you to switch off with its off-grid location in the Scottish highlands. Ran as a retreat centre, they offer a wide range of yoga to suit your preference and ability. The teachers host the retreat and with a packed calendar all year round you are sure to find a weekend to suit your interests. In a beautiful spot overlooking a lock, water takes a leading role at eco yoga, where the electricity is hydro powered and you fall asleep to the sound of the waterfall. You can take a dip in the hot tub or enjoy a hot steaming outdoor bath at the base of the bubbling waterfall. The food was delicious, healthy and hearty with

the fare depending on the chef for each retreat. The retreat I went on was run by the Edinburgh Community Yoga team and was aimed at helping manage your stress levels. The days featured a morning practice followed by brunch, discussion-based workshops and then restorative yoga and Nidra classes in the evening.

Upcoming retreats: June dates are still available
